Just got notice from Duke about their new rate changes. Can anyone make sense out of it???? Old customers can keep their load management program that gives credits but they now seem to have a choice to pick 2 different rate programs. I just read the email and the link that gives the new rates. The rates are different according to time of day, meaning peak, off peak etc. This seems very confusing and I will call them to get more understanding because it appears to mean that our power bill will broken down to getting charged different rates for different times of the day. I think that's what it all means?????? Just what we all need is a power bill that is confusing more than it is. Duke power bill already breaks down charges for power used UNDER 1000KW and OVER 1000KW. Mine breaks down different costs for the actual power then a fuel sur charge. So are we now going to have "time of day charges"??????? Beware and check your bill.

ā ļø ZELLE SCAMS ON THE RISE ā ļø
involves many banks, but chase and wells account holders seem to be targeted more
if you file a police report and are 65yo or older, be sure law enforcement is aware ā there are higher criminal penalties for scamming the senior demographic
apparently, one scam involves receiving a text or email from what appears to be your own bank via the communication method you normally choose
another involves, after youāve reported some problem, receiving a text or email from what appears to be your own bank via the communication method you normally choose telling you to report the claim online
ppl are calling what appears to be the bank and walking thru the online process while on the phone w the bank. at some point a verification code (longer than most) is sent to enter. apparently, the code actually authorizes a Zelle transfer or payment.
one victim actually went to the bank and walked thru the claim process via her phone while in the bank with a bank representative watching and talking her through the process. š¤·š½āāļø
$3900 was taken from her account. wells later said she did authorize the transaction, so no money recovered. according to the victim, wells did issue her a $3.99 courtesy credit.š
sheās filed a police report.

PG&E in California has been doing this for years. They charge peak rates between 4 pm and 9 pm -- just when working folks are making dinner and preparing for the next day.

Solar is worthless do the numbers.Absolutely.Worthless, you'll be dead before. It's paid off and if you just go ahead and pay it off at once. You're still not getting what you think. You're getting . that's why they have so many lawsuits on Solar panels And right here in winter park florida

Marie - well, that must be so true (not!) because you say so, right? I have not paid Duke for 1kw used in 3 years. How is that is that worthless? All I pay for is my panels and that is less than my electric bill would be, AND it will not go up, yet here we are hearing abut rate hikes. On top of that get paid for any excess I produce every year which I sell back to Duke, so far Ive had a bill credit/payment every Feb/Mar. Solar customers are not affected by rate hikes as long as no power is drawn from the grid. Yes, solar is a horrible rip off, isn't?

You're absolutely correct. However, a lot of people have been calling our governor pertaining to this.
Because he said he wanted to know if any of the power companies were doing this to people and from what I've heard a lot of people have complained to him and he made an announcement last week on the news Something was going to be done about this to lower power bills

Peak usage rates are different from their energywise program. I think in the entire time having it I only noticed them throttle some things a couple times, and there was barely any impact from it. Like a water heater would normally keep the tank hot a long time even if it is turned off, so if they cycle it a few hours I'm probably not going to notice. What they're talking about is like charging more to run the AC during the day instead of at night. It might help for some things like a pool pump where you have a choice, but even that I like circulating when it is warmer and things tend to grow more. idk. I don't like the idea of time of day usage. It seems like the grid should be able to handle what is actually needed from it. If they're rolling out more solar, that would ramp up more during the day too so I don't see why they are doing this. I haven't gotten any notices though.

We live in 3rd world country where we can't even build power plants. All this wasted billions on wind & solar that can't handle peak demands. Start using the BBQ more and bathing in the ponds. Anyhow, you'd think they'd calculate the lower of the 2 options each month and bill it automatically. We need a couple nuclear plants and call it a day. š

Solar is worth it. Iām not a climate change zealot, but went solar 3 years ago. Last monthās Duke bill was $35. I also received a $12K direct tax credit for that first year after adding solar. It was not an inexpensive transition, but I integrated the solar cost (+ 2 backup batteries) with my home mortgage refinancing - so now I have 1 payment, and simplifies selling when we decide to move. The batteries give me 12-24 hours of full electric power, depending on how much we reduce other costly demands (like washer/dryer, excessive use of hot water heater, less demand on A/C running (but not 0), etc.). So far, zero maintenance and easy to control via phone app.

so you prepaid your electric bill and pay interest on it. Meanwhile, the equipment loses value rapidly as new technology comes out. Plus, when you go to sell, few people may want to take over the payments. Its hard enough for people to afford a home. People like me don't use much electricity nor can I use tax credits. I don't even plan to be in my current home long enough. Solar don't work for me.

Utilities have invested greatly in solar dear and we pay for it. That's a big part of the rate increaes over the years. More efficient sources like clean coal or nukes would have provided a whole lot more ouncut. Meanwhile, households would also go solar. People have been going solar even at lower power rates.

Great, keep on paying a high electric bill! I will also enjoy lower rates if/when they are implemented.
Note - I have a single mortgage payment that includes the solar costs that I integrated into the new loan when I refinanced (at a much lower interest rate). So, when I sell itās all up to me and what Iām able to sell for, less current home loan balance. There are no separate payments for a buyer to ātake over.ā
The solar company also has upgrade initiatives to move to new roof-mounted panels / system controllers as the technology further matures. Same for the outside wall-mounted Enphase batteries (which are rated almost as high as Tesla batteries, but considerably less expensive - an at the time, didnāt have a 6+ month supply chain wait for delivery).
It takes time to research for the best deals available, from reputable companies.

there is no such thing as clean coal. stop it. Do you want a nuclear power plant in your backyard? Maybe build it in Crane's Roost. I know... tear down the I4 Eyesore and put in a nuclear plant there. People will continue to go solar. Here's a fact: in NC, ya know, that state where they had a hurricane that tore through it and have gotten no help from the government? Well, the solar companies are putting in their solar panels to help, at free or low cost. That's a fact.

That's interesting. I wasn't sure how solar affected roof maintenance though and it was hard to get good answers. Also the batteries were expensive enough that they looked like they would be paying themselves off by the time they would be end of life. If I had your power bill I'd be saving $100/mo (maybe less because you're still paying some costs through the mortgage), but even $100/mo would take a very long time to reach a positive return (but a $12k tax credit changes things a lot, so that may make it worth it). Does it affect insurance at all given the roof impact? Are you on the hook for getting them removed before a roofer can do work or does insurance cover all of those costs as part of a claim, e.g. for a bad storm or hurricane damage, and does that mean they charge a higher premium because of it? I'm curious how that actually works because the folk they send out door to door are just minimum wage salesmen with no real knowledge. It seemed a lot safer to invest in more efficient appliances for now, including a heat pump water heater.

I don't pay high bills. One thing is for sure, I won't have a solar equipment bill that is higher than my savings on electricity, nor will I owe money (or have it in a mortgage) longer than I will own my home.

Fine. Youāve done the math and solar doesnāt work for you. But, it does work for millions of people around the world and it works for me. Solar is now the cheapest way to produce electricity and it is getting cheaper by the day as the technology improves. Iām guessing you bought a cell phone years ago when they were big, clunky and expensive and newer models were coming out every day that were better. Was that a mistake? Stop making fun of people for doing what makes sense to them when it has no bearing on you and you donāt have all of the facts.

Clean coal? There is no such thing and producing electricity by burning coal is more expensive than solar. More than 60% of the new energy added to the grid last year came from solar because it is the cheapest way to produce electricity and is getting cheaper every year. https://seia.org/research-resources/us-solar-market-insight/

FL started doing this in the 80s and at some point, I guess they dropped it. We were doing dishes and laundry at night. There are many countries that are using wind and solar with great success. They don't have gas and other companies doing everything they can to stop them from being successful.

Duke knows they're completely unfettered in FL, so they do what they want. I can't have solar bc I'm in a condo, though I would if I could. I can definitely advise people to NOT do that "set your monthly billing to one price every month' they offer. You will get ripped off. It's not recommended by any consumer organization. I do pay my Duke electric through this company: https://www.solsystems.com/. It adds just a tiny amount to your bill, but they utilize the funds for clean energy. I've been doing this for at least 5 years, when it was offered by Arcadia. Arcadia was bought by Sol. No increase in my small fee and I'm helping the environment. Here's more info, if you're interested. https://www.solsystems.com/impact/

It makes sense. When there is peak demand time they have to use more costly means to supply the power we all need. They are trying to get customers to use more power when it is cheaper, like running the dish washer or electric clothes dryer at those times and putting a timer on an electric hot water heater.

catboxcatboxcatbox with R pass
a 21-17 lead. The Steelers had the ball, and it was a fourth-and-9 situation from the Dallas 41-yard line with just a little over a minute to play in the game. Instead of punting the ball deep into Cowboys territory, Noll chose to run the ball. Pittsburgh running back Rocky Bleier gained two yards, and Dallas regained possession of the ball.
Why did Noll decide not to punt the ball? He had in effect granted his opponent at least 30 yards of vital real estate by not punting. Well, Noll knew that his punter -- Bobby Walden -- had dropped a snap earlier in the first quarter that indirectly led to a Cowboys touchdown. He also knew that his defense had stifled the Dallas offense for most of the second half.
Noll's decision was an act of faith in his Steel Curtain defense, and they responded by intercepting a Cowboys pass on the final play of the game and preserving Pittsburgh's victory. If you would like to watch the NFL Films' highlight film from Super Bowl X, click on the link below to check it out.
I realize that hindsight is 20/20, but if you were in Noll's place, would you have punted the ball in that situation? Why or why not? I'm curious to read your responses to that question.

Anthony Cochran i think in todays game, that wouldnāt be a good decision. Back then it was tough for offenses to move the ball, especially vs great defenses. Negate the fluke opportunity for the opponent. Steeler special teams was shitty all the way around in that game.

Well if Staubach would have connected with Piercy Howard on that one Hail Mary pass that bounced off his chest that would have been remembered as one of the worst coaching decisions ever! The Cowboys had a couple shots at the end zone to win it at the end of the game but came up short, so in hindsight it worked out for the Steelers.

Shaky punting game + that awesome defense? Just about a no brainer imo. Steelers entire kicking game had issues that game. The PK had bruised ribs while tackling on a kickoff and that affected him. Jack Lambert helped him out with Cliff Harris lol.

Chuck Noll was always known for being so business-like, and not a guy to show much emotion.
It was once written about him, that after one of the Steeler's Super Bowl victories, when Chuck saw his wife, he shook her hand.

I would have punted and relied on the Curtain to get the ball back within four snaps; however if I had gone for it I would have had Bradshaw throw a deeper ball oppose to running ā pick basically turns into a punt, or get a completion, or an interference call, with risk of sack/incompletion. Or possibly execute another āImmaculate Receptionā. Yep, I would have punted.

I always felt sorry for Bobby Walden, and what that did for his psyche. He also had a punt blocked in Super Bowl IX that gave Minnesota it's only touchdown. I remember the year that I lived in Bainbridge, GA. (1987) that Bobby Walden also lived there. I was in the only liquor store in town when someone pulled up to the drive-thru. After he left, the owner mentioned it was Bobby Walden. Being a big Steeler fan, I asked if he knew who he was. He said yes, but that Bobby never talked about his NFL years. I can only think that his Super Bowl experiences contributed to that. That being said, Chuck certainly knew what he was doing, and I'll always be glad he made that call.

I was just happy he chose to go for it, giving the Cowboys a slim hope. But were I in his shoes, I would have punted: get Roger Staubach and Drew Pearson as far from the end zone as possible.

Little known fact: Noll incorrectly thought the clock would continue to run during the change of possession. This had been the rule several years earlier but it had been updated in the early 70s. If you watch a replay of the game after the 4th down play, you can see his frustration yelling at the officials on why they stopped the clock.

Not just a dropped snap. Pittsburgh's special teams were a disaster all day.
Dallas's only real chance was a Hail Mary. In 1975, there was no spiking the ball to stop the clock, and very few teams even practiced a two minute drill. Going 61 yards in under a minute, against a defense that was allowed to bump receivers all the way down the field, was much harder than today.

Noll had more confidence in his defense than his punter, still it had to be a hard decision. In reality, they didn't give up that much field position by going for it. You have to assume Dallas is going to do an all out rush so if Walden gets the punt away, it's likely going to be a touch back so they only gave them about 20 yards by running it on 4th down.
It would have taken real guts but instead of running on 4th down, I'd have thrown a pass, the clock is going to stop anyway so an incompletion is no big deal and maybe you surprise the Cowboys and get a first down. (Easy to say almost 50 years down the road, I know)

Nick, someone in this group posted a gif of it. No Steeler touched it. All Percy had to do is get turned about 90 degrees toward scrimmage. He could have used his body to block off any Steeler if he had turned more toward 180 degrees. Makes me wonder if Pearson might have caught that pass. Here is a shot that sort of tells the story.

Giants HC Brian Daboll made a subtly brilliant decision near the end of the game against Seattle yesterday. With under a minute to play, he elected to go for two points up by 9 after the improbable blocked kick TD. if he had attempted a kick, the Seahawks might have blocked the kick and ran it back for two points, making it a 7 point game. Instead, the Giants knelt down on the two point try, not giving the Seahawks an opportunity to recover a fumble. Down by 9, all the Giants could do was try to score twice in 55 seconds.

The NFL Films highlight film shows some Steeler players that were quite angry with the call. Just wondering if those scenes of their disgruntled faces were really a reaction to Noll's decision or just random shots of the players' faces throughout the game and edited to show they were really concerned about his call to go for it?

This is a classic example of looking at the difference between a risk versus a gamble. With a risk there are ways to mitigate the risk to ensure that if the outcome is survivable if the risk failed. Coach Nollās saw his defense as a mitigating factor because of their performance up until that point. A gamble would have been if Dallasā offense had been having success and Coach Nollās decision had the potential of giving the Dallas Cowboys offense a short field and the potential for a game winning drive. This has happened before when Head Coaches decide to go for it on the fourth down because they have no confidence in their defense that if they choose to punt then they may not get the ball back.

The outcome of the game doesn't necessarily make it a great or even good call. Those Steeler special teams were their weak link for sure, but if your defense is what you believe in, then you make it that much harder for the opponent by making them have to go farther to score. It was not a good call, but it didn't come back to bite them.

And the rules.
According to Sports illustrated, during the game, as soon as Rocky Bleier was tackled?
The Steelers assistant coaches started screaming to the officials booth next door to them that the clock was still running.
They were reminded through the glass, that the clock stopped on change of possession.

Well, the Steelers won, so Noll becomes a genius! But if Dallas had scored, we'd still be talking about what an 'idiot' Noll was. That's how these things work. The write up says Walden mishandled a snap in the first quarter. Did the Steelers punt at all after that? If yes, how did they go? Was the Steelers coverage of them good?
By the book, Noll's choice was wrong. I personally wouldn't have done it. I punt the ball. Let's review a few things here. Walden played TEN YEARS for the Steelers. He was on the Vikings for four years before that, and in the CFL before that! He is a member of the Steelers All-Time team! So Noll suddenly losing confidence in him doesn't make sense, especially if it was over ONE snap earlier in the game. Bradshaw was out, so Hanratty was QBing Pittsburgh. If a punt was not to be had, why not take a chance on a long bomb? The clock is going to stop with the change of possession. Maybe you score, maybe you get a pass interference call! Regardless, Noll's decision remains a head scratcher. Dallas made some mistakes on their final drive that helped Pittsburgh out. I think Noll got away with one.
